Gazzamania swept England during and after the tournament as the young Geordie announced himself on the world stage with some impudently brilliant performances against the likes of Holland and West Germany, dribbling through and around some of the most established defenders in the world.

His deadball delivery created winning goals against Egypt and Belgium, whilst he conceded a penalty – but had a hand in creating one – against Cameroon. But it was the yellow card, received for a rash challenge on Enzo Scifo, which would prove much more significant in the semi-finals against the Germans.

In that match one of the most iconic and emotional moments from the whole tournament was captured live on camera, as Gazza, who had just received a yellow card for another rash tackle, realised his second booking of the competition would put him out of the World Cup final should England progress. It needn’t have mattered as England lost on penalties – the heartbreak palpable across the tear-stained face of Gazza which only endeared him to the nation further.

More sadly, it proved to be the only World Cup tournament of Gazza’s career. Who would’ve predicted that at the time?
