Italia ’90: 10 iconic No.10 World Cup stories

Enzo Scifo: Belgium

Belgium number 10 playmaker

Round reached: Last 16 Appearances: 4 / Goals: 1

The 24 year old enjoyed a fantastic tournament, wowing fans with his sublime passing and spectacular shooting.

His chest control and clever volleyed lob-pass from the halfway line created Belgium’s opening goal of the tournament in the 2-0 win over South Korea. However his best was to follow.

Against Enzo Francescoli’s Uruguay (another fantasista who promised so much before the tournament but delivered only a yellow card) Scifo scored from close to 35 yards out: a right-footed thunderbolt struck with the outside of his boot which swerved viciously right-to-left, leaving the keeper scrambling hopelessly across his goal. Belgium won 3-1 allowing them to qualify from the group stages, even after a narrow defeat by Spain.

Despite Scifo’s heroics however, his country were narrowly defeated by England in a closely fought contest in the Last 16, with the knockout goal being created by another playmaker enjoying an even greater World Cup.
