Italia ’90: 10 iconic No.10 World Cup stories

Safet Susic: Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia playmaker fantasista

Round reached: Quarter-final Appearances: 5 / Goals: 1

35 years old at the time, the PSG legend starred alongside Dragan Stojkovic and Robert Prosinecki in midfield.

Despite being substituted after 55 minutes in the heavy defeat against West Germany the classy playmaker returned to create the match-winning goal with delightful chipped throughball, played with the outside of his boot, against Colombia; a game in which he also stuck the post after some thrilling build-up play involving Stojkovic.

Susic then scored the opening goal with a header in Yugoslavia’s 4-1 win over the UAE, and despite his age, played the entire 120 minutes of the Last 16 extra-time victory over Spain, such was his integrity to the team.

Unfortunately, with Yugoslavia down to 10 men against a tough Argentina in the quarter-final, Susic was taken off just after the hour mark, so wasn’t on the pitch to take a penalty in their disastrous shootout.

Please note:
If you’ve made it this far you may be thinking there are two strange omissions. Whilst Ruud Gullit and Lothar Matthaus (the man who actually lifted the World Cup and was arguably the player of the tournament) wore the 10 shirt for Holland and West Germany, they have not been included as I don’t consider them as true No.10s – sorry!
