Italia ’90: 10 iconic No.10 World Cup stories

Robert Prosinecki: Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia playmaker
Round reached: Quarter-final Appearances: 3 / Goals: 1

Three games was all it took for the German born future Croatia star to be voted the tournament’s ‘best young player’ by FIFA.

The 21 year old made little impact when coming on as a substitute in the team’s first game – a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of the eventual champions, Germany – but in his next appearance, again as a substitute, he scored with the help of a deflection which lobbed the ball over the UAE keeper in their own 4-1 victory. Prosinecki was left on the bench for Yugoslavia’s narrow Last 16 win over Spain but was thrust into the starting XI for the quarter-final defeat by Argentina.

His subtle forward passing as part of that outrageously talented midfield helped Yugoslavia dominate the ball and create chance after chance, even when reduced to 10-men early on. Unfortunately the breakthrough never came, and although the youngster confidently converted a penalty in the ensuing shootout, Yugoslavia agonisingly lost 3-2 and found themselves dumped out.
