5 fantasisti who failed at Barcelona

Robert Prosinecki: 1995-1996

Croatia playmaker
Appearances: 23 / Goals: 2

Like Hagi, the gifted Prosinecki also had a spell at Real Madrid prior to joining Barcelona, and coincidentally, were briefly teammates at both clubs; Prosinecki’s first seasons were Hagi’s last at both clubs – although the former Croat midfielder’s own stay in Catalunya lasted just one season.

As Hagi had already discovered, the now ageing and changing Barcelona Dream Team were enduring a nightmare period which concluded with Cruyff, their coach, being sacked. Again, like Hagi, Prosinecki made a promising start during pre-season but his injury curse (something which he’d endured throughout his career) and an apparent fondness for the good life which also contributed to fitness issues, saw him appear in less than half of Barcelona’s fixtures.

What a shame, then, that having already been part of one of the most talented, artistic, creative midfields club football had ever seen – Red Star’s Prosinecki, Savicevic and Stojkovic circa 1990 – Barcelona didn’t see him blossom in the same side with Hagi, Figo and Guardiola – along with the next player on this list…
