5 fantasisti who broke the World transfer record

Roberto Baggio (1990) Fiorentina – Juventus: £8m

Juventus smashed the world transfer record that had stood for three years when signing Roberto Baggio, prior to the 1990 World Cup finals which were held in Italy.

The transfer caused riots lasting for three days in the city of Florence; the Fiorentina fans unhappy that their hero had been sold (against his will) to their bitter rivals. At the time, the transfer also prompted the Vatican to issue a statement of dismay at the amount of money being used in football.

After a frosty start, Baggio became captain of La Vecchia Signora, and went on to somewhat fulfil his enormous potential by winning World and European Footballer of the Year, whilst bringing home domestic and European silverware at a time when future club AC Milan were the country’s dominant force.
